Kenji Itoh has extensive first-hand experience of trade and sea-transport procedures through some 20 years’ service with Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd., with whom he worked in the Information Systems Department as a system analyst and planner. He was transferred to JASTPRO (Japan Association for the Simplification of International Trade Procedures) in 1990 to undertake the role of Asian Rapporteur for UN/EDIFACT responsible for coordinating UN/EDIFACT developments in Asian region under the UN/ECE Working Party on the Facilitation of International Trade Procedures (so-called UN/ECE/WP.4). With the reorganization of UN/ECE/WP.4 into UN/CEFACT in March 1997 Mr. Itoh was elected as the Vice-Chair of UN/CEFACT Plenary. Also he was appointed as UN/CEFACT Rapporteur for Asia until March 2001.
During this time he played a key part in establishing standards for the Japanese shipping industry and in setting up SHIPNETS (Shipping Cargo Information Network Systems, which is currently called as POLINET), as well as undertaking cross-industry and nationwide standardization activities. At JASTPRO, he was responsible for the development, dissemination and promotion of UN/EDIFACT and ebXML related standards not only in Asian region but also in the world. Mr. Itoh is coauthor of the books (in Japanese) “SHIPNET’s ABC, 1989” and “Introduction to EDI, 1997.”
