EDI Resources
Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) is the computer-to-computer exchange of business information using a public standard. It enables businesses to exchange information electronically much faster, more cheaply, and more accurately than is possible using a paper-based system. With its roots in the transportation community, it now is well established across the virtually every industry. When using EDI, electronic documents are given standardized electronic formats and numbers so that all parties can correctly interpret the information being exchanged. EDI exchanges can take place directly between firms or via Value Added Networks (VANs) maintained by firms similar to long-distance phone companies that provide telecommunications connectivity between trading partners. On this page we provide general information to assist in understanding some of the fundamental concepts associated with EDI and its implementation. |
